A major earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck southern Turkey and northwest Syria early on February 6; almost 150 subsequent aftershocks were felt across ten provinces of Turkey as well as the neighbouring countries, in particular Syria; more than 3.5 thousand people died and over 20 thousand were injured in Turkey and more than 800 people died and over 1.5 thousand were injured in Syria.
